Dumpsters are measured in cubic yards, by volume, so a 20 yard dumpster has the capacity to hold 20 cubic yards of volume. If you would like to know the cubic feet simply multiply the number by 27 as there are three feet in a yard and one cubic yard is 3’ X 3’ X 3’. For example our 20 cubic yard dumpster has the capacity to hold 540 cubic feet of volume. If we all were throwing away water or dirt it would be easy to estimate the correct size dumpster, but since boards and debris have irregular shapes there will be air spaces in between the materials and you have to account for that. A 10 yard dumpster is the perfect size for small jobs or cleanouts, it will hold approximately 4 pick-up truck loads of debris. They’re often used on projects like small bathroom or kitchen remodels, garage or basement cleanouts, small roof replacements up to 1500 sq ft or a small deck removal up to 400 sq ft.
A 15 yard dumpster is the perfect size for larger projects or cleanouts, it will hold approximately 6 pick-up trucks of debris. They’re often used on projects like room renovations, bigger garage or basement cleanouts and small roof replacements up to 2000 sq ft or a deck removal up to 500 sq ft.
A 20 yard dumpster will hold approximately 8 pick-up trucks of debris. These are often used on projects like carpet or flooring removal for a large house, large garage or basement cleanouts, roof replacements up to 3000 sq ft, or for a deck removal up to 600 sq ft
A 30 yard dumpster will hold approximately 12 pick-up trucks of debris. They hold twice as much as a 15 yard dumpster. These are often used for projects like large home additions, new home construction, garage demolition, siding or window replacements for a small to medium sized house
A 40 yard dumpster will hold approximately 16 pick-up trucks of construction debris. Dumpsters like these are often used for industrial waste removal or large projects like home construction, major renovations, commercial cleanouts, siding or window replacement for a large home.

Dumpster Rental Costs
The costs will vary depending on the size of the dumpster you rent and the type of debris you are throwing away. The smaller the dumpster you rent the less expensive it will be for the dumpster rental. So it is important to estimate the size of the container you will need for the amount of debris you are throwing away. It may make more sense to rent a larger dumpster and make one trip, then to make two trips with a smaller dumpster. The other factor in the rental cost is weight. You will be charged at the state dump for the weight of the debris you are dumping, so dumping 40 yards of feathers will be much less expensive than dumping 40 yards of concrete.
